My Home Birth Story

If you don't feel like reading a lot, check out the pics. The long story follows...

Doing my best to quicken labor by playing DDR.

8 lbs even. Funny 3 of my 4 kids were exactly 8 lbs at birth.

Our new little family

The Labor story

Friday morning, May 13th, I decided it was high time this baby came out. Our whole family had tickets to Taiwan leaving May 31st, and if I was going I needed this baby out fast. So I walked Anjuli to preschool, a 4 mile ordeal, pushing the kids in the jogger. That night my contractions started. These were different though because instead of the pressure being in the front of my belly it sort of wrapped around my back where I felt a dull ache. Even though the contractions were pretty consistent, I still doubted this could be true labor because I have never gone into labor on my own, and almost thought my body was incapable of doing it. Usually I am induced several days after my due date, which was May 17th. As the night progressed they started to intensify and I was getting a little worried I wouldn’t be able to sleep through the night. With Anjuli I labored all night long and finally gave birth at 5am—it was really hard, and I was hoping this wouldn’t be the same.

I fell asleep but was woken up several times with more pain. By 5am my contractions were 5 minutes apart. I called my midwife, Dr. Lori, around 6am and told her I was pretty sure we were gonna have a baby today. But then as the morning went on my contractions sort of slowed down and eventually stopped. I thought I was mistaken, another fluke. Dr. Lori said that sometimes labor stops for a few hours and then picks up later. She told me to go for a walk, eat a big meal, and then take a nap. After going for a long, uphill walk in Mililani Mauka for 2 hours in the heat of the day, eating Mexican food and taking a short nap, the contractions came back. I remember being on the phone with my mom at about 4pm saying that the baby probably wasn’t coming that day. But shortly after I hung up with her I started to feel them again, about 10 minutes apart.

Then within a half hour they were back to 5 minutes apart. I was still unconvinced that “this was it” and continued to bake cookies for our neighbors that I never officially met even though we’ve been in our new house almost a year… We walked over to deliver them around 5pm and I remember having to stop inbetween each visit to focus on the contractions. About 6pm things were getting intense and I finally told Zui we needed to get these kids out of here. I called Dr. Lori and she sent the Doula over to check my status. Zui fed the kids and drove them over to his sister’s (Lehua) house.

While he was gone the doula helped me set up the room and talked me through the contractions. Dr. Lori called to check on my status and they were about 4 minutes apart. But several minutes later they just started coming on like crazy, one right after another. I was getting nervous no one was going to be there for the birth! Zui came home at about 7pm and I immediately started crying in his arms. The contractions were very strong now and I wanted to be done. When Dr. Lori came I got into the birthing tub and immediately started pushing. Baby Jasmine was born 15 minutes later, at 8:15pm. I was so glad to see her!

Baby Jasmine

Announcing the birth of baby Jasmine Magdalene Leimomi Xiao-Ling Kim!
Born May 14th, 2011 at 8:15pm
8lb, 22 in long

Magdalene Leimomi is my Grandmother's name. I thought it was so cool my Grandma had a Hawaiian middle name--her father served his mission in the Hawaiian islands. Leimomi means "lei of pearls."
Xiao-Ling translates to "morning bells." Yep, she's our little alarm clock :)

The kids sure love her.

My midwife, Dr. Lori Kimata, weighing Jasmine.

Support team: Doula Leanne and Dr. Lori.

I know this is brief, trying to get this updated but each day is so busy. For now we are happily enjoying our new little bundle of joy. Welcome to earth baby Jasmine!!!

Happy Mother's Day

I had a great Mother's day, thanks to an awesome husband :) Zui let me sleep in while he cooked a gourmet breakfast: waffles with sauteed cinnamon apples and fresh whipped cream--yum! He surprised me with beautiful flowers, a new pots and pans set, and a homemade card.
My favorite of all was the homemade card. I was stunned he would take the time to make me something out of my own stamps and paper! In fact, at first when I saw the card I thought he bought it, then I thought wait a sec, those are MY stamps, he must have gotten my friend Teressa to make it for him! And then when I finally realized that HE actually made it, I started crying and couldn't stop...

He had the kids help and "write" me a message (that he transcribed). So funny to read their little stories.
I love my new pots and pans set! We have really been needing one, so it was a great gift.

Zeya loves being a ham for the camera.

That night we went to a Kim ohana party. Zui made my favorite: strawberry pie, it was delicious.
But the best gift of all is happy kids :) and a great husband!

Zeya's Big Fall

Zeya has decided to be a pirate for the next few weeks... Friday morning he wanted to go for a walk so bad, so, in an effort to keep him happy I put him in the stroller, then ran upstairs to grab a few things. I should have known better... next thing I know I hear the scream that all mom's know means something serious. Apparently he climbed up to the top of the stroller, where his weight toppled it over and he landed face first in the gravel. He screamed for an hour, it was so heartbreaking.

As you can see, he got some pretty bad road rash on his forehead, nose, and chin, as well as the lovely black eye. Luckily he is okay, and doing surprisingly well. Zui took him to the ER, where the nurse actually said, "oh look what happens when Daddy babysits..." Zui laughed and said, "I was at work!"
I'm pretty emotional now, being pregnant, so for the first few hours everytime I looked at him I would cry and tell him how sorry I was.
Then when I would pull out the camera he would put on this silly grin and I would cry and say, "how can you smile at a time like this?!"
He has been a trooper. Thanks Zeya for still being all smiles. I promise I'll be a better mom!

Showtime!

The Linda Kim Studio had its Spring Recital on Saturday entitled "Showtime!" The students performed Disney, Popular, and Movie/TV music. The kids had a lot of fun with it, especially since they dressed up in costume to correlate with their song. We also had a guest performer on the drums, Dylan Chang. He accompanied Robert Jamias during his songs, "20th Century Fox Fanfare" and "Hawaii Five-0." It was probably my funnest recital. Hard to believe I have 35 students, sometimes I feel like they are my own kids since I see them weekly. Teaching piano has been a great blessing for me.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter!
We had a fun Easter for the kids. We filled their baskets with garage sale treasures.
Anjuli got a new Barbie movie, 2 leotards with princess skirts for dress-up, a few polly pocket dolls, barbie, and a Hello Kitty pez.
Zion got a mini skateboard and Spiderman helmet. Zeya got a box of Cinnamon toast crunch :)
Zion loves having his picture taken right now. I love the chocolate smeared on his face. He ate a LOT of Easter candy.
My mom gave Zion this Easter outfit (thanks!). He loves it and wanted to wear to church again, today.

Anjuli and Zion are still best friends (and worst enemies). I love it when they're happy :)
